Food Porn: How to Make Money Online Just Eating Your Favorite Food

What is Food Porn?

Food Porn is any type of media that shows exceptionally delicious food. Close-up images of juicy, delicious food in advertisements and it is displayed in such a way that just the way it is spread out, or how the light hits it, leaves the observer going for more.

According to Wikipedia.com, food porn is a glamourized spectacular visual presentation of cooking or eating in advertisements, infomercials, cooking shows or other visual media, foods boasting a high fat and calorie content, exotic dishes that arouse a desire to eat or the glorification of food as a substitute for sex. Food porn often takes the form of food photography and styling that presents food provocatively, in a similar way to glamour photography or pornographic photography.

In the United States, food porn is a term applied when "food manufacturers are capitalizing on a backlash against low-calorie and diet foods by marketing treats that boast a high fat content and good artery-clogging potential". The origin of the term was attributed to the Center for Science in the Public Interest which began publishing a regular column called "Right Stuff vs. Food Porn" for its Nutrition Action Healthletter in January 1998.

Do you Eat with Your Eyes?

The best food porn plays on the fact that the more indulgent a photo appears, the more likely it will trigger our instinct to eat. "Food porn relies on a phenomenon called supernormal stimuli, which exaggerates qualities we're already hardwired to love," says Deirdre Barrett, Ph.D., an evolutionary psychologist at Harvard Medical School's Behavioral Medicine Program and author of Waistland: The Revolutionary Science Behind Our Weight and Fitness Crisis. Usually, that translates to visual cues that a food is high in calories—things like pooling oils and the sheen of sugar—which were coveted assets back in hunter-gatherer days, when calories (particularly the gooey, fatty ones) were harder to come by, says Barrett. That might explain why, according to a recent study from 360i, a marketing firm that studies online trends, pictures of desserts are the most likely to be shared online. Cheesy, oozy comfort foods also get favorited more frequently on sites like Food Gawker or FoodPornDaily.

Based on another scientific inquiry, not getting enough sleep leaves you wide open to food porn's seduction. A study in The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism showed the brain's hunger-and appetite-regulating center is more likely to be stimulated by images of food when you're sleep-deprived. Yet another reason to get those eight hours of shut-eye—or, at the very least, to not prowl the Web when you don't need to.

How to Make Money Online Just Eating Your Favorite Food

Young South Koreans have worked up an appetite for a 'dinner porn' craze that is gone viral. In a bizarre craze gaining in popularity across South Korea, people are streaming themselves live on the web as they tuck into plates and plates of food.

A number of young  Korean food lovers are hitting Afreeca TV, the South Korean version of YouTube, and they're broadcasting an odd form of food-focused voyeurism. It involves a fully clothed man or woman sitting at a table with massive amounts of food in front of them. Unlike regular porn there's no sex, nudity or horny plumbers - all of the pleasure and excitement comes directly from the food. And that food comes in abundance. Millions of devoted viewers are logging in to watch it. It seems to be as simple as that.

Known as "mok-bang" - from the Korean words for "eating" and "broadcast" - the videos show people live-streaming themselves eating their meals.

According to Kotaku.com, one popular broadcast jockeys celebrity of the mok-bang world, is an attractive, small-boned woman who is known as The Diva. She lets viewers watch her eating rice, giant bowls of noodles, pizza, wild Alaskan salmon, fried chicken and tofu lasagna. Web viewers can ask her questions during the live stream.

She is not naked or having an orgasm. She wears sweaters, shirts, over-sized headbands and hats and she doesn't make any gestures that might imply a sexual invitation. She sits in a small room surrounded by cases of Pepsi and stuffed animals. She proceeds to eat all of the food in front of her, in front of a camera for hours, chewing with her mouth open and talking with her mouth full. She even ate 30 fried eggs, 12 beef patties and five packs of instant noodles in just one sitting.

Sometimes a small white dog sits on her lap and receives scraps. Sometimes she dances in her chair. And in every video, there is a blue and white stuffed cat called Doraemon sits awkwardly in a chair, watching the entire thing.

The Diva - who has a day job at a consulting firm - even stays online for another two hours after a session to chat with her viewers just to show that she doesn't throw up the food she eats.

Watchers are not obliged to pay money but can show their appreciation by sending the performers Star Balloons, a virtual currency sold in denominations from $1 to $50. Those Star Balloons can be traded in for real money, with some broadcast jockeys making more than $1,000 for just one video.

If you're scratching your head right now, you're not the only one. But think about it. Eating a ton of food on camera and calling it porn without having to take your clothes off? Not a bad way to make a living.

The stars of the live stream show eat for approximately two hours at a time and can consume copious amounts of food - on an average night. One famous "broadcast jockey" - as the eaters are known - reportedly earned $2,000 for just one night's eating.

Several theories have been floated amongst the Asian press as to how the craze developed, with some suggesting that mok-bang is a way for Koreans, who increasingly live alone, to prevent loneliness or because South Koreans don' t want to eat alone.
