How to Make Homemade Gingered Cranberry Sauce- Simple Recipe

How Cranberry Got Its Name?

This berry grows wild in the marshlands favored by cranes, which leads some experts to trace it to the Low German word kraanbere. However, since the word is recorded in America as early as 1647—a time when it is unlikely that Low German terms would have much currency here—it could be that Americans coined the word independently, noting themselves that the berry grew where cranes lived.

Cranberry sauce can be brushed on a variety of meats before roasting. Great with turkey, ham, beef, and chicken.


INGREDIENTS:

1/2 cup pecans
1 12-ounce bag fresh or thawed frozen cranberries
3/4 cup sugar
3/4 cup orange juice, preferably freshly squeezed
1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger
Zest of 1 orange, or to taste


COOKING PROCEDURE:

1) To toast pecans, spread nuts across the surface of a sauté pan set over medium heat. Allow to cook, tossing pecans occasionally until they turn fragrant, but do not burn. Immediately remove nuts from heat and set aside.

2) Place cranberries in a small saucepan over medium-high heat and pour over these the sugar and orange juice. Stir to combine.

3) Cook until sugar is entirely melted and cranberries begin to burst in the heat, 4 to 6 minutes. Stir again, add ginger and orange zest, and cook for 2 or 3 minutes longer, then turn off heat, add pecans, cover pan, and allow to cool.

4) Put cranberry mixture into a serving bowl, cover, and place in refrigerator until cold, at least 2 hours, or until you need it.

Can you Freeze Homemade Cranberry Sauce?

The cool thing about homemade cranberry sauce on Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner is that you can make it way ahead of time. It will keep nicely in the refrigerator for up to a week, or freeze it for a month or more. Just pull it out of the freezer and put it in the fridge a couple of days before Turkey Day and voila!
